From Boreholes to Mountain Springs

Wonyamoeh!

Our conversation on FA projects during the last convention was fascinating. Your questions and feedback have been enriching. With such a record-breaking donation, I think we should continue that conversation one piece at a time.

Let’s begin with why Fako America shifted from boreholes to mountain springs.

At the Ohio Convention, I shared that Fako America has decided to move away from community boreholes and instead optimize perennial springs flowing from Mount Cameroon. A few people have asked why.

Over the past three years, we invested time and resources pursuing boreholes, particularly in the Boana and Bojoke areas of Limbe. Several drilling attempts failed to produce the expected results. Along the way, we also learned about the challenges of limited water volume, ongoing maintenance, salty groundwater in parts of Limbe, and the dependence on electricity to pump and distribute water.

That experience led us to ask a simple question:

Why are we searching underground when our mountain has been providing water all along?

For generations, perennial springs flowing from Mount Cameroon have supplied our communities. These springs naturally flow downhill. We can use gravity instead of electricity and build around the geography we have been given.

In the next piece, we’ll introduce some of these perennial springs around Mount Cameroon and share what we learned from having conversations about them.
