Did you know that some of the spring water a child in a Fako village drinks today may have fallen from the sky before that child’s parents were even born?

Think about that for a moment.

The water flowing from some of our mountain springs today may have fallen as rain 10, 20, 30, or even nearly 60 years ago. Scientists studying Mount Cameroon, our own Mount Fako, found that rainwater seeps deep into its porous volcanic rocks, travels slowly underground, and eventually reappears as springs. Some of the water flowing today has been beneath the mountain for almost 57 years before reaching the surface.

Our mountain is not simply a place where rain falls. It is a giant natural reservoir. It stores water, filters it naturally, and quietly releases it through springs, sometimes decades after the rain first fell.

Researchers have identified dozens of perennial springs around Mount Fako. Many emerge along what geologists call a spring line, where groundwater naturally returns to the surface. For generations, these springs have supplied nearby communities with water for drinking, cooking, farming, and daily life.

Communities grew around these springs. Villages like Muea owe much of their existence to them. Some of our members, like Mola Ndumbe, grew up fetching water from these very springs.

Yet one question remains.

If Mount Fako has been quietly storing and releasing water for generations, why do so many of our communities still struggle to access safe drinking water today?

The water is here.

The need is there.
