Whether those words ever appeared in an official mission statement is almost beside the point. The story has endured because it illustrates the power of clarity. Everyone understood what success looked like. Every decision could be measured against a simple question: Does this help us beat Coke?
Several years ago, I had the privilege of being part of the deployment of a similar idea in my own organization. Our rallying cry was “Safely Home.”
The phrase was simple, but its impact was profound. It was more than a slogan printed on posters or repeated at meetings. It became a shared mindset. Employees understood that our work was not merely about building roads, maintaining infrastructure, or completing projects. Our purpose was to ensure that every person who used our road network arrived home safely.
The power of “Safely Home” was not in the words themselves. It was in the clarity they created. There was little confusion about why the organization existed or what success ultimately looked like.
This experience has led me to reflect on the organization we are building within the FA.
If I stopped ten FA members and asked them why the organization exists, would I hear the same answer ten times?
A clear mission does not guarantee success, but an unclear mission almost guarantees misalignment. When people understand the organization’s purpose differently, they naturally pull in different directions.
A mission succeeds not when it is written on a website or framed on a wall. A mission succeeds when members can explain it, connect their efforts to it, and use it to guide their decisions.
As we continue to shape the future of the FA, perhaps we should ask ourselves a simple question:
Can every member clearly explain why we exist and what we are trying to achieve?
If the answer is yes, then we are already moving in the same direction.
If the answer is no, then perhaps our most important work is not refining our strategy, but clarifying our purpose.
